K - 2nd Grade
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade PATTS
The primary goal of the PATTS program for Kindergarten through second grade aged students is to help them learn positive social skills that will enable them to resolve conflicts in a nonviolent manner. Through the emphasis of learning caring and responsible behavior, the students learn positive, nonviolent conflict resolution skills.
This PATTS program adopts the perspective that many aggressive children have exceptional leadership qualities that need to be redirected into more socially acceptable behavior. Aggressive children often times have not had the guidance and support from their families, neighborhoods, and peers to utilize nonviolent conflict resolutions skills. PATTS groups are designed to encourage peer support and reinforce positive behaviors. Learning is encouraged through brainstorming sessions, activities and role plays.
PATTS consists of nine, 45-minute weekly sessions. The K-2 sessions focus on positive social skills, ability to demonstrate caring behavior, expressing emotions, learning calming techniques, accepting responsibility for their behavior and nonviolent conflict resolution skills.
This program also emphasizes the necessity for integrating the child’s other support people into the program. A parent night is offered to all PATTS participants as an opportunity to inform the parents of the new conflict resolution skills that their children have learned. This will encourage the parents or guardians to support their children in utilizing their newly acquired skills. The parent night curriculum is included in this book.
The children who are participating in the PATTS program in the school system also need the support of their teachers. This program also provides a teacher training so that the teachers can utilize the PATTS program in classroom conflicts.
